The 50’s Snack Bar In Wilkesboro

Someone pat me on the back because I am writing this WHILE sitting inside The 50’s Snack Bar waiting on my breakfast. You know what that means… this post won’t come at you at midnight!

Let me tell you, I am IN my feelings right now. For the two of you who may not know, my dad and I have breakfast every single Friday morning at Stax Original in Greenville. It is one of the highlights of every week. Our Itinerary sent us to The 50’s Snack Bar for breakfast this morning.

First of all, we found a parallel parking space RIGHT in front of the door. I was able to pull in, so the morning was automatically off to a good start. Who knew the criteria for a smooth morning was being able to easily park in front of your breakfast spot – you learn something new every day!

The door has a bell that alerts everyone when you walk in. You know in the movies when someone new to a small town walks into the local restaurant and every head turns to see who it is? That is EXACTLY what happened! We might as well have been wearing sandwich boards with “First Time Visitors” written across the front. The only thing missing was the hot, single, son-of-the-owner offering to escort us around town for the rest of the day.

Maybe it’s time to put down the romance novels?

I even ordered the breakfast I get with dad on Fridays. There was one difference and it brought actual tears to my eyes…

The biscuit tasted identical to the ones my Mee-Mee used to make. The hairs on my arms stood up a little bit as I was transported back to Friday night suppers in the 80s.

When we went to the register to pay, I told the owner about my emotional reaction. He smiled and said, “darlin’, we make our biscuits from scratch.” Exactly the response I expected.

The 50’s Snack Bar, the essence of small town charm.
