Not really funny so much as, meant-to-be.
You guys know I’m an avid reader. But I’ve never read Pat Conroy’s books. That’s about to change in a big way.
Did I tell you how we booked our girls’ trip to Daufuskie? Pam and I were in a restaurant in Hilton Head, “on our way” to Camp Joy Florida, but that’s another (ridiculous) story, when our waitress told us about the island. Neither of us had ever heard of it, but were immediately fascinated. We literally booked our stay while ON that trip. Having zero idea of what to expect.
Obviously, it turned out to be one of my favorite trips. If you’ve not read my Daufuskie diaries, you can do that here, here, here and here.
Anyway. I knew next to nothing about Pat Conroy. The first morning on the island, we ran into his former student, Sallie Ann Robinson. After twenty minutes with her, the writer in me needed to learn more. We watched the movie, The Water Is Wide, and I bought one of her cookbooks (filled with life stories) the next day.
Fast forward to two weeks ago. JP and I were walking thru town and decided to pop in M. Judson Bookstore to look for a couple of Conroy’s books. At the checkout counter, the associate says, “If you’re interested in Pat Conroy, you should come to our event next week.”
Turns out, author Lynn Seldon and his wife were speaking. He has written a history + travel guide called Pat Conroy’s Lowcountry.

Like I said, meant-to-be. Seldon thought so, too, because of course I showed them the picture of me with Sallie Ann.
I guess this is my long-winded way of telling you to stay tuned for MUCH more…
And if you’ve read Conroy’s books OR been to Daufuskie Island, I’d love to hear from you!
