We Got High|Sassafras Mountain

As I’ve mentioned, the kids are studying South Carolina history this year. Our goal is to visit as many “important” spots around the state as possible.

Have you heard of Sassafras Mountain? I can’t believe it, but I didn’t hear of it until a couple of months ago. It is the highest peak in the state. From the top, visitors can see the Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina mountains. The views are breathtaking.

Preston and Lindi thought it was cool to stand in different states at the same time.

It was about an hours drive from our house. I didn’t think about the altitude beforehand. It is definitely a climb for the car – just keep that in mind when making your plans.

Also, note that the bathrooms may be closed due to Covid. This ended up being an issue for our crew. Oops.

The kids are never ecstatic when I bring out the back packs, but seriously. The views from this classroom weren’t too shabby!

There are two ways to get to the observation deck – both are easy. One is paved and accessible to those with physical challenges. The other (pictured) is a very short and simple hike on a dirt trail.

The observation deck is also wheelchair/walker accessible. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to miss out on this experience!
