Most of you are probably familiar with the Meyer Center. It’s a local school for young children with a variety of disabilities. I worked there for ten years. It was my first “big girl” job. I loved everything about it. Still do. It’s truly a magical place. (Click here to check out their website). My friend Tyler introduced me to the special school. Tyler is funny, charming, intelligent, and outgoing. All from the comfort of his wheelchair. He has cerebral palsy. I’m only telling you that so you know why he’s in a wheelchair. It doesn’t stop him from doing ANYTHING. I’ve never met anyone like him. His loving family is amazing and have afforded Tyler every opportunity in life. The world is a better place because of this family. Anyone who knows them would agree.

When he was little, I claimed him as mine. (He will always be mine). I will never forget the day he graduated Meyer Center and went off to big school. I was so nervous. It’s been forever ago, but I remember searching for books to read to him about the transition. I couldn’t find anything. I came home from work one day and said, “if there’s nothing out there for kids like Tyler who are starting school, I’m just gonna write one.”

So I did.

I had no idea what I was doing, but had a vision in mind. I took writing classes at Furman and Greenville Tech. I joined critique groups with other writers and successful authors. Over the (many) years, the manuscript evolved into a completed project. In true Andrea fashion, it has sat on the proverbial shelf for a very long time.

Back in March I pulled it out, blew the dust off, and decided to submit it to a publisher.

We’re on vacation this week. Well, some of us are. Mom and I are working, but I can’t complain about the “office” view!
